Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is the all-round choice
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is the strongest option for everyday use: hands-free POV capture, calls, open-ear audio and voice assistance in a frame designed to look like ordinary eyewear.
Gen 3 offers up to nine hours of battery life, one hour more than the Gen 2. It also adds a customisable action button, professionally adjustable temple tips and a six-microphone array that cuts more than 90% of background noise. The 12 MP camera captures photos, while 3K Ultra HD video makes a welcome comeback.
Three frame families are available:
- Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 3, in Standard and Large sizes
- Ray-Ban Meta Aviator Gen 3
- Ray-Ban Meta Zena Gen 3
The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 collection is available on 180by2 for pre-order. Clear-lens configurations start at R14,999. Polarised options are listed at R15,999, Transitions options at R16,999, and the Limited Edition Aviator goes for R18,999. Expected shipping date is between 27 October and 3 November 2026.
Choose Gen 3 if: capturing what you see is central to the purchase. It is the practical choice for events, travel, family moments and everyday content.
Look elsewhere if: you do not want a camera on your face or you mainly want open-ear audio and calls. Meta Audio removes the camera and costs less.
Ray-Ban Meta Audio removes the camera
Ray-Ban Meta Audio is for buyers who want smart audio glasses without hands-free photography. That single distinction makes the choice much easier.
The Burbank and Clubmaster frames weigh 43g and provide up to 12 hours of use, plus up to 48 additional hours from the charging case. They support music, calls and voice-based AI through open-ear speakers. They do not have a camera, so they cannot capture photos, record video or describe a scene through their own lens.
All 16 configurations are available for pre-order on 180by2 from R11,499 to R13,999. Expected shipping is between 27 October and 3 November 2026.
Choose Meta Audio if: you want discreet open-ear listening, calls and AI without a camera.
Choose Gen 3 instead if: hands-free photos, video or visual AI are part of the job you want the glasses to do.
New Meta glasses add more shapes and limited editions
Meta Connect also expanded the range beyond Ray-Ban. The Meta Glasses line sees the addition of Meta Nova at R12,499, Meta Capri at R10,999, and two Capri and Adventurer editions designed in collaboration with K-pop star LISA - Meta Capri LISA Edition and Meta Adventurer LISA Edition, each pair going for R12,999.
Other announced configurations include:
- Meta Adventurer Classic Black/Grey with Plug-In Case: R10,999 in Standard or Large.
- Meta Starfire Kylie Ivory/Black at R12,999.
- Limited Edition Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 Aviators: the Milky Beige frame with brown Transitions lenses available for R18,999. Meta describes it as a limited 90th-anniversary edition.
- Meta Fury clear-frame launch edition: Meta says this edition is limited to Connect and Meta Lab stores at launch. Not available on 180by2.
Meta VR Glasses - The smart glasses & VR hybrid
Meta VR Glasses are a natural evolution of all the work Meta has done with its Quests and smart glasses. Aimed at immersive viewing, spatial work and controller-free gaming, they occupy uncharted territory; a sweet spot smack dab between VR headsets and smart glasses.
The headset is featherlight at about 100 g and uses a 5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels. The processor and battery sit in a separate puck, which keeps most of that weight away from the face. Meta also describes the device as the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device and says launch is planned for the northern-hemisphere spring of 2027.

Accessibility: choose the device around the task
Camera-equipped AI glasses can provide useful hands-free assistance for people who are blind or have low vision, but they are not a mobility aid and their AI output can be wrong.
For buyers with reduced hearing, Meta Audio places call and media sound close to the ear while keeping the ear open to surrounding sound. It is not a hearing aid and does not amplify nearby speech. Meta has announced separate US hearing-assistance software for supported glasses, we're keeping a close eye on whether this software will be available in South Africa.
Meta Ray-Ban Display can show visual call captions in supported markets. That may help someone who can read the in-lens display, but it is not a feature for someone who is blind.
Before relying on AI glasses for accessibility:
- Confirm that the exact feature works in South Africa and supports your language.
- Treat AI descriptions as an extra layer, not the only source of important information.
- Double-check medication labels, expiry dates and safety-critical instructions.
- Ask for consent where camera use may capture other people.
